Unlike a sport, the practice of yoga does not make us lose our energy.
Indeed, very often when we want to do sport it is to burn off energy, to de-stress, to find a change of scene in a life that can feel a little too scattered. But the prefix of loss in so many of these words, burn off, de-stress..., should make us understand that we lose our energy in such activities and, like a battery, we will need recharging. After a good night's sleep and a few good meals, our energy and our troubles return to almost the same level, or even more strongly, because through sport our capacity to increase our stress or anxiety may grow along with our physical fitness.
The practice of Yoga allows us to become aware of our energies, then to channel and direct them. The resulting sense of well-being will not come from a simple expenditure of energy, which leaves us merely tired for a while, but from a truly lasting and enduring state.
This state appears easily from the very first Yoga classes and, over the years of practice, takes on real depth, to the point of creating within the practitioner a haven of peace and serenity that is constantly present or quickly recalled.
In the practice of Yoga you will first become aware of the body image and the organs of the body, then of more subtle elements such as the energetic architecture of the body, and finally of the spirit. The table on the next page gives you an overview of this "energetic architecture". The TATTVAS are the manifested elements we can experience in our existence through Yoga.
Who is Yoga for?
Everyone can practise Yoga, at any age, without any distinction.
All beings are equal in yoga.
A lack of flexibility, too much nervous tension or an obvious lack of balance is no obstacle at all to practising Yoga.
The first aim is to accept who we are, with all our qualities and strengths, but also our weaknesses. Only by becoming aware of our abilities and our limits can we transcend ourselves.
